Any valve noise is generally a result from a lifter with internals fouled by dirt or other contaminants. Yet another reason to keep that oil changed! Older engines have solid tappets, and the valve train is generally adjusted at the rocker arm. Cold clearances can be from about .006″ to .020″, depending on the engine, and depending on whether it is the intake or exhaust valve (exhaust valve clearance is generally larger).
