What Fuel Do Cargo Ships Use?

default Cargo ships are a vital component of the global economy, transporting goods and raw materials across oceans and between continents. However, these massive vessels require vast amounts of fuel to power their engines and propel them through the water. This raises the question: what type of fuel do cargo ships use? However, in recent years, there has been growing interest in alternative fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biofuels, which are seen as more environmentally friendly options. Understanding the pros and cons of each type of fuel is crucial for anyone interested in the shipping industry or concerned about the impact of cargo ships on the environment. The answer to this question is not straightforward, as there are several different types of fuel that car...

Panama Canal To Last Another Century With Maintenance Work, Says Officials

From the vantage angle in cranes overlooking the Panama Canal, operators reportedly scrutinize the century-old walls of one of the locks as the siren of a merchant vessel keeps resonating from nearby. Amid a gigantic ditch drained of water, workers scramble to execute the maintenance activity in one of the lanes or chambers of the Pedro Miguel lock, not too far from the Pacific Ocean. Working between the enormous gates and high concrete walls, amid residual puddles of water and the echoing thrum of large water pumps, the maintenance team takes advantage of a temporary halt in traffic to renovate facilities that are more than a century old. Representation Image The 50-mile inter-ocean byway was inaugurated by the US in 1914. Since then, over a million vessels have sailed, h...

New devices for conveying olfactory stimuli in virtual reality

by Bob Yirka , Tech Xplore Wearable odor generators enable olfactory feedback in VR. Credit: Xinge Yu A team of biomedical and mechanical engineers at City University of Hong Kong, working with a pair of colleagues from Beihang University and one from Shandong University, has developed two versions of a system designed to convey olfactory stimuli in virtual reality. Their results are published in Nature Communications. As VR systems become ever more realistic, designers and users have noticed that two of the senses are still very much absent in the virtual world: smell and taste. Much work has been done with the former and a little with the latter, but attempts at both still leave much to be desired. Most systems designed to add olfaction to VR have involved use of a...

Study Observes the Interactions Between Live Fish and Fish-like Robots

by Ingrid Fadelli , Tech Xplore Relationship between attraction ratio and Er. The figure shows the relationship between the attraction ratio and the relative kinetic energy Er of the robotic fish when interaction occurs. It can be observed that there is a significant negative correlation between the attraction ratio and the relative kinetic energy, the Spearman rank correlation coefficient is ρ = −0.535 with a P value of p = 0.000001. This suggests that when the relative kinetic energy of robotic fish increases, the trend of fish actively approaching robotic fish is decreasing. Credit: Zhou et al In recent decades, engineers have created a wide range of robotic systems inspired by animals, including four legged robots, as well as systems inspired by snakes, insects, squid and fish. ...

TotalEnergies Figns Agreement to Develop Kwanza Basin Blocks 20 and 21 in Angola

The Angolan Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG), Sonangol Pesquisa e Produção and diversified energy subsidiary TotalEnergies EP Angola have signed a heads of agreement related to the future development of the Cameia and Golfinho fields, located on Blocks 20 and 21 in the Kwanza basin. This is an important milestone towards a final investment decision (FID), which is expected this year, after partners and authorities’ approval, TotalEnergies said on May 3. The future development project on blocks 20 and 21, located about 150 km southwest of Luanda, will comprise a floating production storage and offloading facility – the seventh for TotalEnergies in Angola – connected to a subsea network. The design of this new p...

Global Air Cargo Demand Continued To Decrease in March, Reports IATA

Air cargo, worldwide, continued to decline in March, in year-on-year terms, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has reported. (IATA is the global representative body for the airline sector.) The declining trend actually began in March last year. Year-on-year, global air cargo demand was down 7.7%, while international air cargo traffic fell by 8.1%. Compared to demand before the Covid-19 pandemic, air cargo traffic in March this year registered a decrease of (also) 8.1%. Yet the March 2023 year-on-year decline in global traffic was an improvement over the figure for February (down 9.4%) and significantly better than the figures for January (a drop of 16.8%) and December 2022 (a fall of 15.6%). IATA noted that it was currently unclear if this signaled the beginni...
